What should I do about condensation on my door?
Interior humidity may take the form of condensation on relatively cool surfaces such as glass as a direct result of too much moisture in the air. If condensation occurs, you may want to take measures to reduce the interior humidity level.
Suggestions to reduce humidity levels in your home include:
- Check your venting
- Use a dehumidifier
- Change settings on your furnaces humidifier
- Leave your blinds open during the day
- Use ceiling fans to promote air movement and exhaust fans in the bathroom when showering
- Install a fresh air exchanger
How do I maintain my brass hardware?
Brass requires occasional maintenance to keep the finish intact.
For routine cleaning:
- Wash brass hardware using warm water with a mild detergent on a soft cloth.
- Do not use ammonia, or abrasive cleaners on the brass as they can damage the finish.
- If the factory clear coat finish has broken down, the handle set may begin to tarnish.
- To return the hardware to its original finish use a lacquer remover to remove the remainder of the clear coat, then polish hardware with a quality brass polish.
- Once polished, the hardware may be sealed using a clear automobile wax, or a spray-on lacquer.
How do I fix a squeaky door?
If your door squeaks when it opens or closes:
- Inspect hinges for damage or excessive wear. Replacements for damaged hinges may be ordered here.
- Lubricate each hinge using a multi-purpose household oil, a non-stick cooking spray, or vegetable oil.
- Check for installation screws that may be over-tightened or under-tightened.
- Also check the door closers. If squeaking is localized to the closer, lubricate the connecting pins, or replace closer if necessary. Replacements may be ordered here.
How do I fix a door that won't close?
If your door does not close properly please check the following items:
- Refer to installation instructions to ensure proper installation.
- Make sure that the handle hardware is properly aligned and latching.
- Ensure the door closer operates freely and without obstruction. If necessary, adjust closer speed by turning adjustment screw at the end of the closer cylinder. If the storm door features two closers, adjust one at a time with the other disconnected. Replacements may be ordered by calling BTSD at 1-877-287-3667.
- Check to make sure the storm door is plumb and square in the opening and adjust if necessary.
- Check for broken, misaligned or excessively worn hinges. Replacements may be ordered by calling BTSD at 1-877-287-3667.
- Verify that the bottom expander is not dragging on the threshold. Raise the bottom expander so that rubber sweep barely touches the threshold. This may also help air trapped between the storm door and entry door escape as the storm door closes.
