Doors manufactured by Beyond the Screen Door Inc. are handmade in Canada using the finest materials. We take time and care in the construction and packaging of your door to ensure that it reaches you in the same top condition that it left our plant.

We are so confident in our product that we guarantee your door for one full year from date of purchase. If you follow our recommendations you will enjoy your new door for many years to come. This door has been crafted from carefully selected lumber, but please bear in mind that this is a natural product and as such will contain small knots, colour variations, etc. These characteristics are true features of wood and will always be present, however, they will not impair the appearance or durability of the door.

*NOTE* Our doors are made to 82" high. They are intended for 80"- 82" openings and can be trimmed to any length in between without altering the structural integrity of the door. To fit for height, trim from the TOP rail of the door only but no more than 2". To fit for width, trim equally from both sides but no more than ¼".

  1. 1Your door should require minimum trimming, but if you do not have the proper tools or are not experienced with wood, contact an experienced carpenter.
  2. 2In order to hang your door you require at least a 13/8" door jamb to accommodate the thickness of the door. If your door jamb is less than this, it can easily be built up or the door rabbetted. (You may require a qualified carpenter)
  3. 3Your door should be ordered to the size of your opening. In trimming the door to fit, ¼" maximum (not including your rail) is allowed from each of the four sides. A warp or twist not exceeding ¼ of an inch will not be deemed defective.
  4. 4When installing hardware, trim from the hinge side only to allow enough room to fit the lock set. If purchasing our hardware, please read instructions carefully, if it is not drilled precisely the door will not function properly.
  5. 5Your hinges should be installed 7" from the top edge of your door and 11" from the bottom (Also see hardware package for details). Clearance between the door frame and the edge of the door should be at least 1/8" on all edges. Depending on how exposed your door is to the elements you may want to add an extra hinge, shock chain or pneumatic closer to ensure that the wind does not catch the door.
  6. 6After trimming and hanging the door, remove the door and lightly sand the entire surface with 150 grit sandpaper and remove all dust. Now your door is ready for painting.
  7. 7We recommend a good quality oil based primer and oil based paint to be used in finishing. Consult your paint dealer for his/her recommendations. Immediately after fitting your door apply two coats of primer then sand the entire door with 220 grit sand paper. Now apply two coats of your desired finish. Paint your door without the screen, the hardware or storm kit installed to avoid defacing them.
  8. 8BE SURE TO FINISH ALL SIX SURFACES. Your door, as typical of all wood products, is subject to swelling and shrinkage when changes occur in temperature and humidity. The TOP AND BOTTOM EDGES MUST BE SEALED to prevent damage to your door. Even if you can’t see it, moisture can! If you plane or trim your door after finishing, these edges must be REFINISHED.
  9. 9Inspect your door's finish at least once a year and refinish as necessary.
  10. 10A package of turn buttons to hold the screen in place is stapled to the spindle rail. Holes are pre drilled for easy installation. If your screen becomes damaged, remove the panel and have the screen replaced. You may add weather-stripping to your door, as well as our storm conversion kit for energy efficiency.
  11. 11In the event that a B.T.S.D Inc. representative deems your door defective and issues a replacement door, it can only be replaced with the same style and size of door. B.T.S.D Inc. is not responsible for the hanging, painting, or changes in construction of replacement doors. (We do reserve the right to substitute a similar style of door.)

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Robertson #8 (red handle) screwdriver
  • Phillips (star-shaped) screwdriver
  • flat head screwdriver
  • tape measure
  • hammer
  • square
  • pencil
  • hacksaw
  • level
  • power drill

PLANNING

Allow the door to adjust to the outside temperature for an hour or two before installation.(Vinyl door only) Decide what way the door should swing. Usually, a storm or screen door is hinged on the same side as the main door. Doors are shipped with Z-bar frame pre assembled for shipping purposes. The top frame must be separated from the two side z bar frames before installation begins. The shipping pins holding the top frame to the sides may be tapped out. The installation will be easier if you have a helper.

STEP-BY-STEP

A. Install Drip Cap (Header Z-Bar)

  1. 1Center the drip cap on top of the doorframe so it’s evenly spaced (see diagram).
  2. 2Fasten drip cap on the hinge side only using one of the eleven #8 11/4 inch colour matched Robertson screws supplied with the door.
Figure 2

B. Cut Hinge-Side Z-Bar

  1. 1Measure the distance from the underside of the drip cap to the top of the doorsill.
  2. 2Use the hacksaw to cut the bottom of the hinge-side Z-bar to this length.
If your doorsill is sloped (as shown in the diagram) you may cut the Z-bar to match this angle.

C. Install Hinge-Side Z-Bar on the Door

Figure 3
  1. 1Hold door on its edge hinge-side up.
  2. 2Place Z-bar on the door edge (see diagram).
  3. 3Position Z-bar so that it extends 3/16 of an inch above the top of the door when viewed from the front.
  4. 4Center the hinges in the hinge groove and pre drill a 1/8" pilot hole in the top and bottom hinge. Fasten the top and bottom hinge with 2 of the twelve #8 1" self drilling zinc screws. Pre drill and fasten the rest of the hinges with the remaining #8 1" self drilling screws.

D. Place Door in Opening

  1. 1Place the door in the opening so hinge-side Z-bar is even with the end of the drip cap and pushed tight to the underside of the drip cap.
  2. 2Pre-drill a 1/8 inch pilot hole into the brick mould through the top mounting hole in the Z-bar. This helps prevent the brick mould from splitting.
  3. 3Use one #8 11/4 inch colour matched screw to secure the Z-bar.
Note: If the door opening is at the upper limits of the size tolerances (see Determine Door Size), you may need to place shims between the doorjamb and the Z-bar. After measuring for shim size remove the door and secure the shims to the brick mould. Place the door back in position and replace the #8 screw.
  4. 4Use a level to ensure Z-bar is vertical, then pre drill 1/8" pilot hole in the second hole from the bottom and secure the Z-bar with one of the #8 11/4" colour matched screws.
  5. 5Open the door and check that it swings freely and doesn’t bind. If door swings freely pre drill and install remaining # 8 11/4" colour matched screws.
  6. 6With the door open, drill 1/8-inch pilot holes through the mounting holes on the inside edge of the hinge side Z-bar just above and below the hinges.
  7. 7Install the eight #8 1-inch zinc screws.

CAUTION Do not over tighten the Z-bar. If it bends, back the screws out slightly until the Z-bar springs back into position.

E. Level and Secure Drip Cap

  1. 1Slightly loosen the screw holding the drip cap in position on the hinge side.
  2. 2Adjust the drip cap until there is a uniform gap between the drip cap and the top edge of the door.
  3. 3Drill pilot holes through the drip cap and secure to the doorframe with the remaining two #8 11/4 colour matched screws.

F. Cut and Install the Latch-Side Z-Bar

  1. 1Measure from bottom of drip cap to top of sill on the latch side. If your doorsill is sloped you may cut the Z-bar to match this angle. Before cutting, hold latch side of Z-bar in position to ensure that you trim any excess length from the bottom of the Z-bar.
  2. 2Use a hacksaw to cut the Z-bar to length.
  3. 3Position the Z-bar on the latch side and allow a gap of 1/8 to 3/16 inch between the door and the Z-bar.
  4. 4Drill the top 1/8 inch pilot hole and screw in one #81/4 inch colour matched screw.
  5. 5Close the door to make sure the gap is uniform at the top and bottom then pre-drill the remaining holes and secure using the colour matched screws.

G. Install the Hardware (All Season vinyl doors only)

Before proceeding, ensure that the inside latch will not interfere with the main door hardware.
  1. 1With the door in the closed position, decide at what height you would like your latch set to be. 39” from the bottom of the door is standard. Ensure that your storm door hardware does not interfere with your main door handle. Measure in 1 1/4” from the edge of the door door and, using the template supplied, carefully drill the 3 holes with a 5/16” drill bit completely through the door.
  2. 2Insert the square spindle into the square hole in the back of the outside lever assembly.
  3. 3Guide the outside lever assembly, with the spindle, through the installation holes from the outside of the door.
  4. 4Guide the dead bolt plate plus the inside latch over the spindle.
  5. 5Insert the 2 long machine screws through the inside latch assembly and draw together.
  6. 6Align the handle so that it’s level, then tighten the 2 machine screws using a Philips screwdriver.
  7. 7With the door closed, position the strike plate on the door jamb so the latch bolt engages the strike plate. Install the strike screws into the upper and lower slots on the strike plate. If needed plastic shims are supplied to shim out the strike.
  8. 8Ensure the handle latches properly, and install the self tapping screw into the bottom hole of the dead bolt pack.
NOTE:The strike may be adjusted slightly after installation.

H. Install the Pneumatic Door Closer

  1. 1Measure to locate the centre of the rail. Ensure the door closes and latches freely before installing the closer.
  2. 2Install jamb bracket on door jamb at this height. Predrill the four holes in the door jamb with a 1/8” drill bit to avoid splitting the jamb.(See diagram H1)
  3. 3Slide the hold open washer onto the closer rod.(See diagram H2)
  4. 4Attach the closer to the door jamb bracket using the pin provided.(See diagram H3)
  5. 5Extend the closer a 1/4 inch using the hold open bracket to lock it into place.
  6. 6Mount the door bracket to the closer using the pin provided.
  7. 7With the door closed hold the bracket to the middle of the door and pre-drill 2 pilot holes 1/4 inch deep through the door bracket.(See diagram H4)
Note: Take care not to drill through the front of the door.
  8. 8Insert screws to hold the bracket in place, then open the door and slide the hold open washer back allowing the door to close.
  9. 9Adjust the closer by turning the adjusting screw located in the end of the closer if needed, to ensure the door latch engages properly.

I. Install the Sweep

  1. 1Slide the door sweep over the door’s bottom edge with the slotted holes facing the inside of the door.
  2. 2Align the sweep with the latch side and position so rubber fins touch the doorsill evenly along the bottom of the door.
  3. 3Drill pilot holes through the 3 sweep mounting holes using a 1/16 inch drill bit.
Note: Take care not to drill through the front of the door.
  4. 4Secure the sweep using the three #8 11/4" colour matched screws
